HISTORIC
Le Marais (The Marshland)
Situated between the Boulevard Beaumarchais and the Boulevard du Temple, to the east and the north respectively, and the Rue Beaubourg to the west, the Marais district is an historic and touristic district of Paris. Originally, Le Marais was nothing but an enormous marsh, and it was only from the 13th century onwards that convents were built in the area and that a market-garden industry began to develop. The Marais district was incorporated into Paris following the construction by Charles V of a fortified wall (reinforcing the wall previously built under Philippe Auguste). King Charles V took up residence in the Hôtel Saint-Paul, but his successors preferred the Hôtel des Tournelles. King Henri II, wounded by Montgomery in a jousting tournament, died there. The building was destroyed on the orders of Catherine de Médicis. The Place Royale, whose construction was ordered by Henri IV, was only completed in 1612, and Le Marais became a fashionable district, full of luxurious private residences where salons were held. On the death of Henri IV, assassinated by Ravaillac, and the accession of Louis Xlll, Le Marais lost its popularity and was occupied by small businesses and light industry.
Today Le Marais is constantly being restored, so that its architectural treasures are being rediscovered. A new charm has made it a popular place to visit. In its narrow streets you'I1 find small shops selling creative and often highly original art objects, as well as fashionable clothes at affordable prices. The numerous cafés and fashionable nightclubs have become meeting-places for the capital's gay community
